LG and WILLIE DIXON

Goodhand's first brush with the "real thang" came around 1972 when Willie Dixon brought his All Stars to Le Coq D'Or on Yonge St. in Toronto. At that time they had a Saturday afternoon jam hosted by the band and Goodhand was last to take the stage. Dixon must've liked what he heard because on his next trip through Toronto, at the El Mocambo. He took a surprised Goodhand to a Chinese restaurant after his Monday night show and hired him for the remainder of the week to be an All-Star.

.

Along with Carey Bell on harp, Buster Benton on guitar, Lafayette Leake on piano, Clifton James on drums and son Freddie Dixon on electric bass). Goodhand, to his delight, was also hired a few months later on Willie's next trip through TO. At that time Willie also asked if Larry could come to Chicago to record on his next album as he didn't think his regular guy could make it. He, however, did make it, but Goodhand was thrilled to be asked, anyway. Another close call came when Buster Benton decided to leave Willie's band out of the blue when they were in Denver CO in the middle of a tour. Willie decided to offer the job to Goodhand but the needed phone number was locked in his office in Chicago.

.

It was a Sunday and the only thing Willie could think of doing was call the El Mocambo to see if he could get it from them. Unfortunately, that was back in the days when bars were closed down on Sundays and all Willie could raise there was a cleaning person whom Willie said spoke very little English. Though they never did work together, Goodhand did sit in with Willie and his All-Stars a number of times after that and the two remainded good friends until Willie's untimely death in 1992.
